A guide to OT Driver Assessment in Victoria Australia:
VicRoads may send you a letter requesting you to undertake an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment. This may be due to your GP or another medical practitioner providing medical advice to VicRoads.
Broadly speaking there are 2 parts to an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment:
The Off-road Assessment (Or office based Assessment):
An assessment of your medical, physical and cognitive functioning. As well as test of road law knowledge.
If you will require modifications in order to be able to drive a car (e.g. a spinner knob, hand controls or left foot accelerator) this will be discussed as well.
On- Road assessment:
This is completed in a dual controlled vehicle. It will usually occur with a driving instructor next to you in the front and the OT driving assessor in the back of car.
Possible outcomes of an OT Driver Assessment:
- Pass with a full licence
- Pass with conditions on your licence (e.g. 10 km local area licence or must have specific modifications installed in their vehicle)
- Fail: each driver must pass their licence test according to VicRoads criteria.
